A Sustainable Cellar Door in the Barossa, South Australia

This is a sustainable cellar door for Ballycroft Vineyard and Cellars, the small but mighty Barossa winery run by passionate duo Sue and Joseph Evans.

This one-of-a-kind tasting room, soon to be nestled in the heart of Greenock, South Australia, will blend Earthship principles with local materials and ingenuity. It’s a hybrid design that will feature the signature Earthship elements: earth cooling tubes for passive ventilation and summer comfort, a sunroom for winter warmth and year-round indoor food growing using greywater, and stunning strawbale walls that provide natural insulation and timeless charm. An earth berm—where soil is mounded against the building’s rear and side walls—will further enhance the structure’s performance, providing natural bushfire resilience and exceptional thermal stability through the extremes of South Australia's climate.

True to the Earthship ethos, the new cellar door will be self-sufficient — powered by the sun, harvesting its own rainwater, and treating its own wastewater. It’s a low-impact, climate-positive space that will complement the Ballycroft story: small scale, hands-on, and deeply committed to the land.

Together Joseph, Winemaker and Viticulturist and Sue manage the tasting room with warmth and care, have poured their passion into every bottle — and soon, into this remarkable building that will serve as a fitting gateway to their vineyard and values.
