Earthship homes designed for Australia
An Earthship takes passive solar design further. Its sunroom captures winter sun and provides space for an indoor garden. Earth berms and thermal mass help moderate indoor temperatures, while shading and earthtubes help keep the home comfortable through summer. These elements work together as part of the Earthship design.
An Earthship can also be designed to meet all its own electricity and water needs through solar power and rainwater collection. Its wastewater can be managed on site, with treated water put to productive use in gardens and lawns, and for growing food where the approved system permits.
Earthship Eco Homes was founded by Dr Martin Freney, who has adapted Earthship design to Australian conditions and building requirements. Martin designs homes around their site and the people who will live in them. He also coordinates hands-on workshops where people learn sustainable building methods while helping bring an Earthship to life.
How Earthship Eco Homes can help

Design & Approval Process
Step 1 - Plans and Projects
Please have a look at the Plans and Projects sections on this website to get an idea of what is possible.
Step 2 - Design Questionnaire
The Design Questionnaire will guide you through some of the big decisions you need to make for your dream eco home. Whether you want a "pure" Earthship, or something like an Earthship, Martin is an expert on adapting the Earthship design principles to suit your budget, micro-climate and your dream. This questionnaire will take about 20mins to complete - answer as many questions as you can - just do your best - and this will help with the next step...
Step 3 - Free Consultation
Book a free 15 minute consultation with Martin to discuss your eco home dreams. As an owner-builder of his family's strawbale eco home and Earthship BnB, and as the designer and workshop coordinator of many Earthship projects around Australia, Martin can quickly get you pointing in the right direction (North!). Marty did his PhD on Earthships, travelling to the USA to measure the Earthships' amazing indoor temperature stability and to interview the pioneering Earthship dwellers in the harsh desert of New Mexico, learning how they live off-grid in such style and beauty. Get your questions answered by Australia's Earthship expert.
