EarthBnB - Bushfire Resilient Tiny Home

EarthBnB is a super sustainable, bushfire resilient, self-sufficient, tiny home (44 square metres floor area). This is the next evolution of Earthship Ironbank, Australia's first council approved Earthship.

It is ideal for a bed and breakfast or a small home for a single or couple in an off-grid location. Many Councils will allow you to have a bed and breakfast as well as your own home. You can't have two "dwellings" but you can potentially have one "dwelling" and a small building for "tourist accommodation" or "granny flat".

There may be grant opportunities to reduce construction costs:
  • The Federal Government's Black Summer Bushfire Recovery Grant (project value of $20,000 up to $10 million) - this applies to Council zones that were affected by the bushfires in the summer of 2019-2020.
  • The South Australian Government's Tourism Industry Development Fund (project value of $20,000 up to $500,000). The government will contribute up to 30%.
  • The Tasmanian Government's Tourism Development Loan Scheme

You will need:
  • Land -  idealy in a rural or semi rural area (bushfire prone areas are ideal). A flat site or north facing slope is ideal. A minimum area of 20m x 20m is needed with good solar access (minimal shading to the north).
  • Money - $129,000 is the approximate construction cost, dependant on your site conditions (soil type, slope etc)
  • Permission - Earthship Eco Homes can supply a set of drawings and other documentation (engineering, energy assessment etc) for Council approval.
